Locomotion Workout

Locomotion, aslo known as Animal Flow, is the latest trend in functional training. This class can be used as a stand-alone program to improve overall fitness. It is a varied and comprehensive workout that can improve mobility as well as muscular and cardiovascular strength.

By progressing through these exercises, you will work on moving through a variety of planes and directions, enhancing coordination and body awareness. This builds physical endurance, strength, flexibility and mobility.

About this class

The locomotion class offers a stimulating and effective program inspired by both quadrupedal walks and Animal Flow. The Locomotion class is a workout designed for any fitness level that focuses on developing strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and coordination through multi-planar, fluid workouts.

Locomotion involve fluid, dynamic movements that mimic animal movements, such as crawling, jumping and swinging. The strength or HIIT exercises, simpler in structure, allow you to expend energy in a different way, increasing cardiovascular intensity while giving your concentration a break of sorts.

You will leave this class with two satisfactions: the euphoria of fatigue and the feeling of being freer in your movements.

What is locomotion?

Inspired by the agile and graceful movements of animals, locomotion exercises borrow from yoga, capoeira and breakdance. Using only your body weight, you will perform complex and precise movements that require strength, flexibility and coordination. It is a good way to develop mobility, strength and motor control, which are lacking in many other training programs.

Who is locomotion for?

Locomotion is suitable for anyone looking to spice up their workout and gain more control over their movements. It is also very adaptable to all fitness levels. Whether you're just getting back into training or have been moving for a long time, you'll find something interesting for you.

The components of locomotion

The program is divided into several types of exercises that aim to train different muscle groups:

Wrist exercises

These are quadrupedal movements that help strengthen the wrists and prepare you to move on the floor. These exercises are necessary to perform a variety of postures that emphasize the hands without risk of injury. Since most people are not used to crawling on the floor and putting weight on their wrists, this goes a long way in preparing your body for the movements to come.

Mobility

These are exercises that help you get into the positions you will use in the mobile animal poses. Improved flexibility of muscles, tendons, and joints can be achieved through mobility, which increases their range of motion. All weak points are addressed and strengthened.

Interruptions and transitions

These are the movements that connect one position to another to create a flow. Without the transitions, you would be left with a set of isolated movements.

The above exercises are great for warming up ligaments and joints, increasing blood flow, and improving movement quality and overall well-being. They can be incorporated into a cardio workout as a warm-up or done on their own as a relaxation exercise. Consider Locomotion as a way to improve your movement quality and well-being.

Locomotion classes in Montreal

In the Locomotion training classes offered at the Gymnase, located in Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, we break down precise movements that require strength, flexibility and coordination.

Throughout the session, the instructors will adapt to each participant; you will be offered exercise options at different levels of difficulty.

Good to know about the Animal HIIT class:

  • Class offered Monday and Saturday. However, even if the class is not entitled "Locomotion", several teachers (notably Maude) integrate locomotion into their exercise sequences.

  • Class duration: 50 minutes

  • Please bring a towel and a bottle of water.
